Eglevsky Ballet was founded by legendary New York City Ballet principal dancer Andre Eglevsky, one of the greatest dancers of his generation. For over 50 years, Eglevsky Ballet has been bringing balletic artistry of the highest caliber to Long Island and has long been recognized as a prominent, professional company.

Eglevsky Ballet continues its annual tradition of The Nutcracker, the largest and only professional production on Long Island. In addition, the company boasts a full-time professional training program located in Bethpage. Students from Nassau, Suffolk, and Queens travel to the state-of-the-art facility where they may enroll in a pre-professional training program or participate in open classes. Eglevsky Ballet provides professional caliber training for students of all ages and abilities.

Eglevsky Ballet’s mission is to enrich students and community through the disciplines of classical ballet. In addition to The Nutcracker and training program, Eglevsky Ballet presents two summer intensives, a spring production, master classes, performing opportunities, community outreach, and education.

Eglevsky Ballet offers a full-time professional training program in its state-of-the-art facility. Additionally, two summer intensives and a master class series throughout the year complete the dancer’s training.  An annual professional production of “The Nutcracker”, a spring production, outreach performances, and arts-in-education program allow the company and its dancers to bring the art of dance alive and to the Long Island community.

Eglevsky Ballet provides professional training for students of all ages and abilities. Classes are offered in ballet, pointe, modern, jazz and contemporary.   An accredited Pre-School program designed for ages three through five, focuses on introducing the youngest dancers to the art in an environment tailored specifically to their level. Adult classes in ballet, jazz and yoga complete the program.



The mission of Eglevsky Ballet is to enrich the lives of its students and the community through the art and discipline of classical ballet.  By preserving the rich history of our founding director, maintaining a professional company and school, Eglevsky Ballet will bring a more profound performance experience to the cultural life of our region and beyond.  Securing a place in the arts education of not only our students, but the education of those in undeserved or in-crisis surroundings, we broaden the base of service for our art, thereby making it more accessible.  Eglevsky Ballet desires to create an environment where students can thrive allowing for further development beyond the classroom.  Additionally, our unparalleled professional faculty will be able to teach in an environment that is conducive to the rigors and demands of classical ballet.  Professional dancers, regisseurs, educators, and choreographers are also encouraged and challenged to breathe life into new and existing repertoire.


Bringing over 35 years of experience as a dancer, choreographer, director, and arts executive, MAURICE BRANDON CURRY is the seventh Artistic Director in the history of Eglevsky Ballet.

Mr. Curry was the Chairperson of the Dance Division at Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts.  He has also served as the Director of Educational Programs at the Joffrey Ballet School in NYC  where he was also a member of the faculty. His work as an educator has been recognized by many international organizations as he is a frequent guest instructor throughout the world.  Mr. Curry’s ballets are in the repertoires of international ballet companies, academies, colleges, and performing arts high schools.  He has achieved major success as a director and choreographer in both the concert and commercial dance worlds working with many notable dance luminaries and recording and media artists. Mr. Curry's work has been seen worldwide on stages, television, and film.

Mr. Curry began his initial training with Ned Williams and continued at the School of American Ballet.  Subsequently, he studied with Ann Brodie, founding artistic director of Columbia City Ballet, Richard Thomas, Richard Rapp, and many other notable educators.  As a dancer, Mr. Curry appeared with New York City Ballet and danced with Carolina Ballet, Kaleidoscope Dance Company, Les Ballet Jazz de Montreal, and DancEllington.  In addition to his BFA in Choreography, Mr. Curry holds a degree in Digital Filmmaking and Multimedia. He is a sought-after consultant with dance studios, colleges, and conservatories across the country on matters of policy, programming, and curriculum.  

In 2015, Mr. Curry choreographed a new production of THE NUTCRACKER specifically for Eglevsky Ballet.  The production's new and innovative scenario, costumes, and choreography was a box office success, surpassing records of previous productions by the company.  For the Eglevsky Ballet, he has created partnerships and collaborative opportunities with the Long Island Children's Museum, American Chamber Ensemble, and the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra.   In 2016, new works by Mr. Curry were added to the repertoires of the Alabama School of Fine Arts (where he was the resident guest artist) and the Columbia Ballet Collective at Columbia University in NYC. Maurice Brandon Curry has served on the board of directors for  (a company directed by Andrew Palermo and Taye Diggs), the Bangor Ballet, DANCER magazine, and the Mark Stuart Dance Theater.   Currently, Mr. Curry proudly serves on the advisory board of the Young Choreographers Festival.            Mr. Curry was recently nominated to membership at the International Dance Council which is sponsored by Unesco. Consistently, students under Mr. Curry's tutelage and mentorship have been accepted into the most prestigious training programs, universities, and summer courses in the nation.  His former students have danced or are currently dancing with the New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, the Joffrey Ballet, the Royal Ballet, the Dutch National Ballet, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, Ballet San Jose, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Cincinnati Ballet and on Broadway, in film, and on television.

Training Program Levels and Requirements


Kinderdance Division

First Steps (ages 3-4)

Studio 1

Studio 1

First Steps is an introduction to the integration of dance and music.  Though designed to bring out the child's natural instinct for movement, concepts such as basic motor skills and coordination, listening, sharing, and spatial awareness are all addressed at this stage.

This class meets once per week.


Pre-Primary (age 4-5)

The Kinderdance curriculum continues with the Pre-Primary class.  The focus here is to continue and yet refine the work done in the First Steps program, as well as advancing the students knowledge of classical ballet. The beginning elements of ballet vocabulary, class structure and classical form, are nurtured here. Additionally, musicality, coordination, and ballet class etiquette are essential parts of the class.

This class meets once per week.



Pre-Ballet is the "gateway class" for entering into the graded level curriculum of the academy.  All the material is geared towards developing the skills needed for Level I.  Lessons focused on barre work, musicality, alignment and placement, and terminology all ensure,  upon completion, the successful transition to Level One. 



Level I (ages 6-7)

Studio 2

Students of all ages begin in Level 1, learning the basic ballet positions, the progression of a standard ballet barre, and learning the French vocabulary that defines all ballet steps. The student moves into beginning center work, away from the support of the ballet barre.

When the student learns the ballet technique appropriate for the level and when the student's body has become strong enough to accomplish the movements taught, at the discretion of the faculty and Artistic Director the student moves to the next level where more intricate steps are introduced. For all ages, advancement is based on ability, not age.


Levels II and III

Levels II and III reinforce the rigors and demands of classical ballet technique. These levels thoroughly instill and affirm ballet vocabulary and technique. In addition, students learn focus, discipline, class etiquette, and develop skills to fully engage their musicality.

Once students have advanced to Level II, the study of jazz dance is added to their curriculum to begin their study of stage performance.

Levels IV and V

Levels IV and V are considered intermediate and advanced-beginner levels, respectively. They expand upon the basics taught in the lower levels to create a strong understanding of classical ballet technique.

Upon graduation from these levels, students will have mastered a thorough knowledge of classical ballet vocabulary and proper technique.   Students also develop valuable life skills such as self-discipline, motivation, creativity, increased critical thinking, confidence, and self-esteem.

Level IV begins training in Horton method modern dance and pointe, and variations. In addition, students are introduced to contemporary dance, advanced leaps and turns and variations.  They begin the study the proper execution of advanced and virtuosic steps.    Level V continues with increasingly rigorous pointe training, mastery of placement and advanced technique, modern, contemporary and a development of artistic style.  Special workshops in partnering and character dance are also a part of the curriculum.

Level VI is currently the most advanced level in the school. Students focus on perfecting technique, building physical strength, and developing artistry.  Their training in Horton method modern dance and contemporary continues, as well as Variations, and special workshops in partnering and character dance.

This program is designed for dedicated, hardworking, disciplined individuals.

Eglevsky Ballet offers a free ballet program for boys ages 6-10.  These classes are taught by a male faculty member and focus on the art in an environment conducive to keeping the attention of young boys.  The athleticism of the art as well as proper technique and discipline are a part of the curriculum. Once basics are learned, the students are mainstreamed into regular classes.  Boys at all levels must wear white T-shirts, black tights, white ankle socks and black or white ballet slippers. Beginner boys are permitted to wear black bike shorts in place of tights.


Becoming a professional dancer is more than logging hours in the studio and performing on stage. "Gather 'Round The Barre"  is a program designed to help dancers enrich their lives with important seminars topics such as:

  • Nutrition and wellness

  • Injury prevention

  • Résumé preparation

  • Summer Intensive Selection

Additionally, they will meet dancers from the ballet world, stage, screen, and concert stages to gain career advice and inspiration from these successful artists.

We are excited to share with you a new program that will launch in Fall 2016 in public schools on Long Island. The program is an extension of our mission and promises to expose more young people to the joy of movement.  EB Dance! instructs third through fifth-graders in dance, music, and choreography. It also uses movement as a tool to instill discipline, commitment, teamwork, and self-confidence in youth.  There is another component of the program that engages youth at-risk and/or under-served youth.
